Phosphating
Phosphating is a conversion coating for ferrous parts and is often used as a pre-treatment for painting or powder coating. If parts are not pre-treated before the application of a paint, there is a substantial risk of corrosion (in this case, rust), which as well as reducing the strength of the part, will also likely cause the paint to flake off.
Another common use of phosphating is its use with oil or a lubricant. This can either be for the purpose of temporary rust prevention or long term lubrication. Metal Finishings Ltd. can apply oil to your job as part of the process.
Due to the porous nature of phosphate coatings, it is almost always unsuitable to use alone, it should always be followed by oiling or painting.
Metal Finishings Ltd. provide two types of phosphating — zinc phosphate and iron phosphate. Zinc phosphate is our most common phosphating treatment. It provides superior corrosion resistance to iron phosphate and produces a thicker coating. We would recommend this for most uses.
